DIVERSITY COORDINATORS

Shawn Bellamy

My name is Shawn Alysia Bortolon Bellamy. I was born in Edmonton, Alberta but have lived in Prince George since I was one year old. I have long been a proponent for diversity, especially since my own background consists of different ethnicities and personal views.

I have served and still do work with various committees and boards such as: the City of Prince George's Intercultural Committee, the Social Grants Committee, the Community Foundations' Grants Committee, the Multicultural Heritage Society and the Bonanza Charities Association. I feel this has offered me a unique view into the cultural and societal fabric of this community by networking, developing conferences, workshops and working in the areas of multiculturalism, diversity and anti-racism. I also served on UNBC's Diversity Steering Committee as a community representative and have been both a UNBC and College of New Caledonia student.

I was actively involved with the Native Friendship Centre at many levels; working for almost 15 years in the development of their Human Resources Manual, Safety Committee Guidelines and implementation, and various policies and procedures manuals working intimately with their Board, Executive and Senior Managers. I am very familiar with both First Nations and Metis culture, having worked on Treaty support and research, Aboriginal history, and the forming of proposals and programs to better assist the advancement of Aboriginal people.

Although I was staying at home to raise my two small children, upon seeing the posting for Diversity Coordinator within UNBC, I believed the criteria and objectives were my forte'. I am excited to be working alongside my co-worker, Diane Bertoli, and the Coordinator of the Northern Women's Centre, Sarah Boyd-Noel. We would be grateful as well to receive feedback and support from UNBC's Diversity committee in creating multicultural and diversity initiatives. Thank you in advance for the opportunity to share our ideas and work with you on this important, year-long initiative.

Diane Bertoli

My name is Diane Cheryl Bertoli. I have lived in Prince George for approximately forty one years. I worked for Standard Bus Contracting, Prince George Transit for twenty-four years in the capacity of school bus driver, special education driver, VIP Charters, and transit driver. I made a decision to refocus my career and attended CNC for three years eventually obtaining a Business Hospitality Certificate and a Social Services diploma.

I am very aware and focused around issues concerning diversity and multiculturalism. I worked with women, children and their families for the past four years in various capacities with the Prince George & District Elizabeth Society. My positions included: Crisis Intervention Worker, Court Worker Program (Interim Coordinator), Victim Services, and Administration. I also successfully developed and facilitated the Grand Parents Support Circle Program at Elizabeth Fry; a program funded by Crime Prevention. I am looking forward to working collaboratively with my co-worker, Shawn Bellamy, and key individuals with UNBC administration, including the Diversity committee on the 'Diversity in Action' project created by the Coordinator of the Northern Women's Centre, Sarah Boyd-Noel. I look forward to your input!
