"Diversity is, in action, the sometimes painful awareness that other people, other races, other voices, other habits of mind, have as much integrity of being, as much claim on the world as you do."

William Chase, AIDS Activist

The "Diversity in Action" project's primary goal is to work towards the prevention of discriminatory and/or harassing behaviour on UNBC campus. The "Diversity in Action" project is comprised of three (3) principal activities:

1) The organization and delivery of a Multicultural Day at UNBC;

2) The organization and delivery of diversity and harassment prevention education on campus (marking of 'commemorative' days throughout year);

3) The creation of a series of one dozen (12) educational "resource cards" on a variety of topics relating to harassment and diversity education.

The mission statement and values in UNBC's Action plan 2002-2007 states, "In the spirit of its Carrier motto - 'En cha huna' - UNBC celebrates diversity and intends to reflect and foster the rich cultural diversity of Northern British Columbia and its peoples".

"The University is committed to promoting and increasing diversity among its students, staff, and faculty and eliminating barriers to the free flow of ideas from the diverse cultures, disciplines, and fields of study which make up UNBC. UNBC celebrates diversity - especially so in its relationship with the Aboriginal peoples of the northern region. UNBC is also committed to ensuring fairness in matters relating to gender and social equity, particularly with respect to academic opportunity" In light of these goals, the UNBC Women's Centre strongly believes in the importance of facilitating and delivering this governing philosophy around diversity outlined above.
